Lincoln Elementary is a school hard at work!!!

Lincoln School, a K – 5 public elementary school of 584 students, is located in the midst of the bustling activity and busy industry of Chinatown in downtown Oakland. It is surrounded by various commercial businesses, government offices, some single family dwellings, as well as larger apartment complexes.

A large percentage of the student population comes from homes where a language other than English is spoken. Of the English Learner population the largest number speaks Cantonese. Lincoln School receives Title I funding due to the low income level of a substantial number of the families. Despite the parents’ income level and second-language needs, Lincoln School enjoys high academic test results with Academic Performance Index (API) scores progressing from 821 in 2001 and most recently to 899 in 2007. It has met the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria for all components: participation rate, percent proficient, and API goals. Lincoln has a high re-designation rate with 34.6% of the students progressing from Limited to Fluent English Proficiency.

Students and families have a long tradition of recognizing the importance of school, and that is reflected in the outstanding attendance rate: as high as 98% in 2007.

The school staff has been stable, providing continuity for the entire school community. The staff includes 26 out of 26 fully credentialed classroom teachers, 13 of which are bilingual in Cantonese. The staff works hard to guarantee that conditions are in place for high student achievement. The administration works to support staff and to ensure organizational and educational effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability. Together we have developed partnerships of responsibility with students, parents, and the community. The district provides all students with current, high quality textbooks and instructional resources. The curriculum materials are aligned with state standards, and the staff is committed to their implementation.
